I have the exact same issues!
The sidebar also contributes heavily to CLS when it is made “sticky”. Even without any content in the sidebar, CLS was still bad.
When I made the sidebar non-sticky to stay up at the top CLS issues went away.
Just FYI and thanks for looking into it.

Sorry for the late reply. Have you updated your child theme files? Most of the changes from the update would be overridden by your child theme files.

that is why I asked previously which files and which code was changed 🙂
With that knowledge I could check and amend the child theme files…

As I remember you had 2-3 files in your child theme and thought you will update them all. The following files have been changed:

thanks, actually I only had the featured-links.php and featured-slider.php in my child template and have just updated it.
But still as I use both featured links and slider only on the main start page, the CLS remains very high around 0.285 for desktop on the main page and on all other pages with content (regular posts, no slider, no featured posts) around 0.14-0.15ish in the „improvement needed“ range.
PageSpeed still recommends 5 items under „Avoid large layout shifts“, is there any way you could check these again?
On posts it seems to be around the featured image mostly plus sidebar if that helps. On the start page it is a mix of all 🙂

any update? Our start page now has a CLS of even 0.89 (mobile) after the last update and of course that is a red flag.

Unfortunately, it could not be fixed. I’ve added width and height attributes to all image tags as suggested. But I’m open to any ideas…

Checking the details on google page speed results, the main issue on normal posts seems to be with the featured image, that is mostly contributing negatively to CLS. Are there any different ways to display it you might be able to utilize?
Maybe that is the problem in featured image:
sizes=”(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px”
And on our main page this seems to be the largest issue with CLS:
Hope that helps to find the root cause and fix it.

To be honest, we can’t spend too much time on Google Pagespeed issues, I know it’s trendy and you want to score 100/100 but it’s not really important. You can read this article for more details – https://kinsta.com/blog/google-pagespeed-insights/
I know it’s trendy now and everyone is talking about it but still, it’s not that important at all. Our website score is super low – https://wp-royal.com/, page load speed is the key, not the score by google which is not used as a measure. Hope this helps.

don‘t even want to get 100%, just get out of the red and yellow area in the search console… But fully understand, I will try to find a developer then to help me with that and use the fix in the child theme.

I’m sorry we could not help with that right now, but when it will be necessary we will do it to even 100%.
P.S. I suggest not to spend more time on that, trust us, it’s not necessary yet.

I think I found one issue here by accident.
the featured image has set dimensions of width and height of 200×200 in the code but the pictures that actually loads is the 300×300 px version, causing CLS.
can you give me some guidance how I can make sure just the 200×200 px image will be loaded?
